Bellarmine College Prep held its Mass of the Holy Spirit the morning of August 16, an annual tradition at Jesuit schools throughout the world at the start of the academic year. The Mass, celebrated outdoors on the Leo J. and Mary G. Lucas Quad, was attended by all students, faculty, and staff.
The presider of the Mass was Fr. Mario Prietto, S.J., superior of the Bellarmine Jesuit community, who was joined by concelebrants Fr. Mike Moodie, S.J. and visiting priest Fr. David Romero, S.J.
In his introductory remarks of welcome, Mr. Chris Meyercord ’88, president of Bellarmine College Prep, noted that we are all called to be people who are for and with others. “May the Holy Spirit inspire our community, so that through this year, the fire in our heart can be ignited. The burning fire of love, the relentless fire of justice, the gentle fire of kindness.”
Following Mr. Meyercord’s welcome, the land acknowledgement was given by Alex Galbraith ’24, representing the Indigenous Justice Coalition. Music was provided by the Bells Choir, who were joined by members of Athletes for Justice and several faculty and staff members.
Mr. Rod Jemison, who is beginning his first year as principal of Bellarmine, delivered the Gospel reflection. “I have so much to learn from the Bellarmine community. My new home. My new family.” Key to the theme of Mr. Jemison’s remarks was his encouragement for all to help those in need. “And while I am speaking of the larger community, let us not ignore each other on this campus – when you see your fellow classmates alone, ask how they are doing, and more importantly, wait and listen to the answer. If you see someone eating alone, ask if they would like company. Always give each other the benefit of doubt; always think good intentions. Someone once told me, ‘Good people know good people.’ And remember, if one Bell is suffering, we are all suffering. We must never ignore God’s message – being of service to others makes us whole; it is the human experience.”
