On the morning of Saturday, September 18, 46 students from Bellarmine hit the beaches of Santa Cruz to take part in the annual International Coastal Cleanup. This event, known as the largest volunteer ecology project on Earth, has taken place each September for more than 30 years.
“Bells cleaned up over 100 pounds of trash and recyclables from a mile-long stretch of Panther Beach and Hidden Beach during the three-hour project,” noted Mr. Patrick Adams, Bellarmine faculty member and Green Initiatives Coordinator.
Joining Mr. Adams for the project were Bellarmine students from Marine Biology classes and Oceanography Club, and members of the Surfrider Club with Bellarmine CFO, Mr. Ron Miller and his daughter, Amita, a sophomore at Notre Dame High School.
“The event gave students an opportunity to take direct action to reduce the volume of dangerous debris that enters the Earth’s oceans and also enjoy the beautiful California coastline,” Mr. Adams noted.
