Bellarmine held its annual Summit on Human Dignity, also known as the Justice Summit, on January 31. As noted by Mr. Geronimo Desumala, director of Christian Service, “This special school day is significant in that we set aside the normal routine to focus on our mission as a community of people gathered to educate students to seek justice throughout their lives.”
During his opening remarks, Mr. Desumala noted the importance of relationships and of “forming stronger communal bonds.” Those gathered were also reminded of a prayer from an earlier assembly: “We can weave a blanket of compassion and healing to share with all those in need.”
The day began with a general plenary session held in the Patrick Wayne Valley Memorial Gymnasium, featuring keynote speaker Camille Llanes-Fontanilla, vice president, Silicon Valley Programs, Sobrato Philanthropies. Ms. Llanes-Fontanilla addressed the intersection of socioeconomics and mental health, and she emphasized that “Relationships are foundational for thriving people and thriving communities.” Among statistics she shared was that 33 percent of Silicon Valley households do not earn enough to meet the basic needs of their family.
Our speaker encouraged students to “stay hopeful and committed” and to “take the time to build relationships with one another” as their journey of discernment and purpose continues. “Take action,” she said. “Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
A new feature of the Summit on Human Dignity this year is recognition of an individual or agency having a positive impact on the community. The inaugural Caminantes in Servant Leadership recognition was presented to Maritza Maldonado, founder, Amigos De Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment. Mr. Desumala presented the award, which was produced in Bellarmine’s Maker Lab, to Ms. Maldonado who was gracious in her remarks and who reminded everyone that “We all have a responsibility to care for one another.”
Two breakout sessions were held during the day with topics including Feeding Our Neighbors, The Domino Effects of Homelessness, Where Socioeconomic Status Meets Mental Health, and an Immigration Simulation.
The annual Summit on Human Dignity is coordinated by Bellarmine’s Christian Service Program and the Partners in Mission and Ministry team.
