During the afternoon of April 3, the Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild, the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and the Asian affinity groups on campus (Chinese Culture Community, Filipino Student Association, Japanese Culture Community, Korean Student Association, and Vietnamese Student Union) celebrated its first annual Asian Heritage Celebration.
Held on the Leo J. and Mary G. Lucas Quad under sunny skies, the event was centered on highlighting the rich and diverse culinary, musical, and artistic expressions of the cultures of Asia.
Guests were able to learn how to make Chinese lucky knots and red envelope lanterns, participate in the Japanese Way of Tea demonstration, practice calligraphy, have their name written in ancient Filipino Baybayin script, and enjoy delicious food from different countries while mixing their own boba drinks.
The celebration involved student performances, including a lion dance by Vietnamese students, musical instrument performances by Chinese students, Tinikling dances, and the Korean students performing K-Pop dances and a Taekwondo demonstration.
Bellarmine’s celebration of its diversity will continue April 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. when, after a two-year hiatus, Global Village will return to campus. The event, presented by the Unity Council, will showcase the diverse composition of Bellarmine through traditional foods from all over the world, fun activities organized by Bellarmine’s affinity groups, student performances, art projects and other fun activities. This year’s theme is Rooted in Unity, corresponding to the school’s justice summit focus on Caring for Our Common Home.
