When California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 793 into law on August 28, among the youth most excited about the occasion was Bellarmine junior Aditya Indla ’22, who had an opportunity to be on the Zoom call when the bill signing took place. Aditya has been involved with anti-tobacco advocacy, has worked with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and even testified in front of the California State Senate Health Committee in May 2020 in support of SB 793. The bill, which takes effect January 1, 2021, prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products in stores, including vapes and menthol cigarettes. Aditya, who has expressed his gratitude to Bellarmine for “instilling its values of service,” has demonstrated community involvement for the benefit of others in many ways, including through an initiative this spring with Bellarmine’s Maker Lab and the nonprofit organization Maker Nexus to produce and provide healthcare workers with protective face shields.
