The final state qualifying tournaments with Lincoln-Douglas debaters occurred last weekend at Westmont High School.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate (resolution: “Predictive Policing is Unjust”)

Congressional Debate:
-2nd place: Akshaj Dwivedula ‘20 - qualifier
-7th place: Jason Cappelloni ‘22 - qualifier
-8th place: Michael Lutz ‘22 - qualifier
-9th place: Neal Dwivedula ‘22 - qualifier
-12th place: Ethan Osier ‘20 - qualifier
-1st alternate: Saket Budhia
-3rd alternate: Veer Juneja
“Overall, these results have been an impressive testament to the amount of hard work that these students have devoted to coaching each other, giving practice speeches, meeting with coaches, doing practice rounds, etc.” noted Speech and Debate coach Aaron Langerman ‘11, who credits
Matt DeLateur ‘12, head of the Lincoln-Douglas program, and Vern Cleary, who has assisted coach DeLateur this year. “Last year, we qualified 6 entries in debate and 12 in speech for a total of 18 entries. This year, we qualified 12 in debate and 18 in speech for a total of 30 entries.”
The National Qualification Tournament is scheduled to happen at Bellarmine in two weeks. In addition to Langerman, DeLateur, and Cleary, Bellarmine Speech and Debate coaches include DeeDee Sullivan, Xavier Liu ‘17, and Ani Prabhu ’16.
